Common in a wide range of habitats, including deserts, grasslands, forest and agricultural fields, red-tailed hawks typically weigh about two to three pounds and have wingspan of about four feet. It is most often a predator of small mammals, such as rodent and squirrels, and prefers to hunt on land and during the day. Because they are common and easily trained as capable hunters, the majority of hawks captured for falconry in the United States are red-tails.
