A dune is a hill of loose sand built by wind and water. Dunes are most common in desert environments and near beaches. They are created when sand is pushed or bounces up the face of a dune and slides down the lee side, called the slip face. Dunes come in many shapes and forms, depending on the directions of the wind. Dunes ecosystem are extremely difficult places for plants to survive, due to limited soil moisture and nutrients, and burial by moving sand. Dune plants and animals are often uniquely adapted to the harsh, dry dune environment.
