Located on Cleopatra Hill overlooking the Verde Valley, Jerome grew from a settlement of tents into a roaring copper mining community. After booming in the 1920's the mines were sold to Phelps Dodge and eventually closed in 1953. Today Jerome is a thriving tourist and artist hub of galleries, restaurants and coffee houses, with a state park and a local museum devoted to mining history.
