Gray whale use baleen to filter krill and other small crustaceans, which they scoop up from sediments on the sea floor. The stable Eastern Pacific population of about 20,000 individuals migrates from breeding lagoons near Baja California to feeding grounds near Alaska. Newborns measure 12 to 16 feet long and weigh about one ton, while adults are generally 43 to 49 feet long and weigh 17 to 36 tons. They are dark gray with lighter gray and white scars from parasites.
