Elk are among the largest land mammals of North America. Early European explorers thought the North American elk resembled a moose, and consequently gave it the name elk, which is the common European name for moose. Elk live in forest and meadow, feed on grasses and plants and weigh about 500 to 700 pounds. A subspecies called Roosevelt elk live near the Pacific and are significantly bigger and heavier than their Rocky Mountain cousins.
