This stratovolcano, the larges in volumen in the Cascades, is about 600,000 years old. It last erupted in 1786. Measuring 14,179 feet (4,322 meters) high, it is the fifth highest peak in California. The US Geological Survey rates it as a "very high threat volcano." The summer climbing season runs from late April until October. A Climbing permit is required from the local ranger station.
